At Tareen Dermatology we offer various cosmetic treatment options for hair loss including but not limited to Keralase and Platlet Rich Plasma or PRP. All treatments are overseen by our board-certified providers and administered by our advanced practice estheticians.

How Is It Treated/How Does It Work?

PRP non-surgical hair restoration consists of the application of your own Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) topically and by injection into the area of thinning hair to stimulate new hair growth and improve health and texture of existing hair.

How does the PRP treatment work?

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is used to stimulate and nourish follicles for hair growth. Highly concentrated plasma contains platelets that release growth factors; these growth factors have been shown to generate new hair and improve the density and health of your existing hair.

Is there any discomfort and downtime with this treatment?

We use a cooling device to make the treatment very comfortable. There is minimal tenderness and mild swelling in the injection sites for 3-5 days following the treatment.

How long does it take for a single treatment?

The entire treatment including preparation of your PRP in our office, cleaning your treatment area, injection of the PRP into the scalp which takes less than an hour for most patients.

What results should I expect from my PRP treatment?

PRP contains a rich and concentrated mix of cytokines and growth factors which can be activated and injected into the areas of thinning hair; leading to stimulation of dormant hair follicles and hair regeneration. It has been observed that, at the very least, PRP treatment improves hair health, strength, individual hair diameter and prevents further hair loss which can maintain the current number of hairs and improve the health and quality of your current hairs; and at best induce new hair growth the degree of which varies from person to person.

PRP has been shown to induce new hair regeneration in both male and female pattern hair loss, decelerate hair loss in men and women, make finer hairs thicker, Increase density and strength of hairs. Medications, nutrients and Extracellular matrix can be added to PRP to enhance the results of hair regeneration following PRP treatments.

How many treatments will I need for hair restoration?

We recommend starting with 4 treatments, four weeks apart for best results for most people with thinning hair as an initial treatment. You will need maintenance treatments every one to two years thereafter to maintain the results of your PRP hair regeneration treatment.

How soon will I see results from my PRP treatment?

Although you will start to see improvement in hair texture, a thickness of hair shaft and growth of new hairs in the treated area within two weeks after treatment, it typically takes three to six months from your initial treatment to see measurable results.

Does PRP treatment need to be repeated for the prevention of hair loss?

Unfortunately, the results of PRP treatment for hair regrowth are not permanent. Nothing can change your genetic predisposition for hair loss and hair loss will return if no maintenance type treatment is done. Most patients male pattern hair loss and female pattern hair loss who respond to PRP hair loss treatment, require repeat treatment anywhere between 12-24 months after their initial treatment. As with your initial treatment, it may take another three to six months to see measurable improvement in hair density. Subsequently, PRP may need to be repeated periodically depending on your individual response to PRP therapy, your genetics, the extent of your hair loss and if you are using any other adjunctive treatments with your PRP hair loss treatments such as topical minoxidil, oral Propecia etc. Additional treatment frequency will also depend on your hair treatment goals.

What are the side effects of PRP treatment for thinning hair?

Because the PRP is obtained from you, it virtually eliminates the possibility of an allergic reaction.

  1. Like with any treatment involving needle injections there mild bleeding, easily controlled with the application of pressure.
  2. There is a small risk of bruising and of infection at the injection site.
  3. There is some tenderness in the treated area which can last a few days.
  4. In a small number of individuals, there may be mild swelling of the treated area which can last a few days.
  5. Rarely there may be shedding of hair.

Keralase is a laser treatment designed specifically for hair growth, and can both increase the number of hairs as well as the thickness of the individual hair.

What is Keralase?

Keralase treatments utilize the Lutronic LaseMD Ultra laser to create microchannels in the scalp. A growth factor serum is then massaged into these microchannels to stimulate hair growth.

How long will the appointment take?

Our Keralase appointments are 30 minutes in length. The appointment consists of specifying the exact treatment location, utilizing the laser treatment to create microchannels, and a vigorous scalp massage of the growth factor serum into the scalp. You will leave with slightly damp hair. There is very minimal discomfort during the treatment.

What is the recommended treatment course?

We typically recommend a series of 6 treatments spaced 2-4 weeks a part. You will start to see results as soon as 2-4 weeks, with full results varying anywhere from 2-12 weeks after your final treatment. Additional treatments can be performed after the series as a maintenance option.

How can I prepare for my Keralase treatment?

We recommend the following prior to each treatment:

  • Shower the night before your treatment with plain shampoo. Do not use any hair products including conditioner, gel, mousse, etc. It is important that your hair is both clean and dry for your treatment, or you will not be able to proceed. Arriving with product or wet hair risks singeing the hair, and therefore we will not proceed with treatment.
  • Limit strong, direct sun exposure one week prior to treatment.
  • Discontinue the use of topical steroids to the scalp one week prior to treatment, and throughout the course of your series of 6 treatments. Topical steroids can include Betamethasone, Clobetasol, Cordran, or Flurandrenolide in any formulation.
  • You may continue the use of the following hair loss medications/topicals you may be using: vitamins and supplements, Spironolactone, Finasteride and Minoxidil.

What is my aftercare?

Aftercare will be discussed with you during your procedure. In general, your skin has the potential to be more sensitive and prone to sunburn, so we recommend you limit strong sun exposure one week prior and post treatment. We also recommend waiting 24 hours after treatment to shower and limiting strenuous activity for 24-48 hours following your hair loss treatment.

Keralase treatments can be scheduled by calling our office, or by visiting our Front Desk. Individual treatments can be purchased for $695, or a series of 6 treatments for $3295. This treatment is offered in our Roseville office only.
