  • One of the most important factors when considering a cosmetic surgical procedure is to choose the right doctor. Dermatologists are experts in the medical, surgical and cosmetic treatment of skin, hair and nails.
  • As with any surgical procedure, there are risks associated with cosmetic surgery, however, patients can reduce the risks by finding a qualified dermatologist.

Questions to Ask When Considering Cosmetic Surgery

  • What are the doctor’s credentials? Is he/she a board-certified dermatologist or other appropriately trained physician? Ask to see their credentials.
  • How many of these procedures has the physician performed? The procedure should be one that the doctor performs regularly.
  • What results can be expected? How long is the recuperation period? Ask to see before and after photos of the physician’s previous patients.
  • What are the risks?
  • Where is the procedure being performed?
  • What is the cost?

A study conducted in 2002 by the American Academy of Dermatology found that patients who want information about a medical procedure they are considering are twice as likely to seek that information from the Internet as they are from their doctors. But the survey results also showed that the doctor’s recommendation ultimately carries the most weight in the patient’s decision about the procedure.
