AAD Media Backgrounder: Physician Credentialing

AADA Policy

  • The AADA supports the concept of physician credentialing by state medical boards only where the process is reasonable, appropriate and fair. The process should ensure:
  • Review of credentialing by a committee of the physician’s peers including members of his or her own medical specialty.
  • Due process must be provided to ensure fairness in all considerations of credentialing and in any cases involving revocation of credentialing.
  • Appropriate criteria to be used in the credentialing process, may include such things as certification by a national medical specialty board as recognized by the ABMS.
  • The AADA opposes any regulations for physician credentialing that are unfair, unreasonable or inappropriate, such as requirements that would place the applicant in the position of obtaining hospital privileges or transfer agreements in situations where they are unattainable.

Message Points

  • The AADA supports physician credentialing by state medical boards that is reasonable and fair. For example, credentialing boards should include members of the doctor’s own medical specialty, and consider the physician’s certification by a national medical specialty board.
  • Board-certified dermatologists have four to six years of post-graduate training in medicine and surgery and are required to take continuing medical education throughout their careers.
  • Some state medical boards are considering a requirement that physicians who perform office-based procedures be credentialed by the state medical board.
  • Physician credentialing is the process of confirming a doctor’s qualifications and may include a review of the physician’s medical license, experience, certification, education, technical capabilities and overall character. Malpractice claims and adverse incidents involving patient care also may be reviewed.
  • Typically, credentialing is done by hospitals or other organizations where the doctor wishes to practice.
  • Requiring a physician to obtain hospital privileges or written transfer agreements does not guarantee or necessarily promote patient safety, and should not be part of the credentialing process.
  • Patients considering a surgical procedure should always ask about the doctor’s credentials and ask how many of the procedures he or she has performed.
