DNA Convention in San Francisco a Success
With Dr. Crutchfield’s support, 13 of us attended the DNA Convention in San Francisco last month.
The DNA Convention provided us with an opportunity to attend lectures on a variety of conditions like Psoriasis and Acne, and to learn more about treatments like Biologics and Cosmetics, just to name a few.
Upon completion of our lectures, we had a chance to tour Alcatraz which we all enjoyed.
We look forward to next year’s convention in Washington D.C.

Step-by-Step Packing to Reduce Wrinkles
- Place tissue or plastic bags between each garment to let items slide rather than settle.
- Lay pants waistband to waistband with legs left outside suitcase (don’t close it yet!).
- Fold blouses or shirts and place them face down.
- Turn suit jackets or blazers inside out, fold them and face them down.
- Fold the pants legs back over the top.
- Add skirts, sweaters, socks and undergarments—all laid flat.
- Line the sides of the suitcase with shoes and cosmetics (both in plastic bags).

Sneaking in Math and Science
- Look for math and science in chores like pairing socks and sorting groceries. Try sorting them by color and size.
- Use large bowls in the bathtub for sink-and-float experiments.
- Encourage curiosity in nature by naming things and looking closely at sticks, rocks and bugs and other things that interest your child.
- Make play dough together. Simply mix 2 cups of flour and 1 cup of salt. Gradually add water until it becomes pliable, but not sticky.
- Point out geometric shapes that you see at the grocery store. Make it a game.

Special skin microscope easily checks worrisome moles
As a general rule of thumb, Dr. Crutchfield recommends that everyone have a baseline comprehensive skin examination at some point in their life. Based on the examination, your dermatologist will recommend how often you should have additional exams in the future. The most important thing is to get a prompt evaluation if you have a mole changing in any way (size, color, or shape) or any spot on your skin that bleeds and does not heal in three weeks (without provocation). Also, any person who has had a melanoma should make sure that all of their first-degree relatives have a baseline skin examination. At Crutchfield Dermatology we are pioneers in the use of the revolutionary dermatoscope in the evaluation of suspicious moles. This allows Dr. Crutchfield to better see the inner structure of the mole, often times eliminating the need for an uncomfortable biopsy.

Inquiring Minds Want to Know…
Does Urinating on a Jellyfish Sting Stop the Burn?
The following guideline can be applied to most jellyfish stings: The patient should remove any visible tentacles, using gloves if possible. The area of the sting should be rinsed with household vinegar. The acetic acid of the vinegar can block discharge of the remaining nematocysts (stinging cells) on the skin and should be applied liberally. If vinegar is not available, salt water can be used. In laboratory tests, urine, ammonia, and alcohol can cause active stinging cells to fire, which means applying them can make a minor sting worse.
