May is National Melanoma/ Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month
This month is dedicated to increasing public awareness of the importance of skin cancer.
Although melanoma accounts for only about 4 to 5 percent of all skin cancer cases, it causes most skin cancer-related deaths. However, if detected and treated in its earliest stages, melanoma is often curable.
Skin cancer affects one in five Americans, and more than 1 million new cases are diagnosed each year. Of these cases, more than 47,700 are melanoma, a cancer that claims 7,700 lives each year.

Kids Play, Worries Rest and Fun Happens at Camp Discovery!
For young people with a serious skin condition, Camp Discovery offers a summer camping experience unlike any they've had before. Every year, the American Academy of Dermatology sponsors a week of fishing, boating, swimming, water skiing, arts and crafts, and just plain fun.
Under the expert care of dermatologists and nurses, Camp Discovery offers campers the opportunity to spend a week among other young people who have similar skin conditions. Many of the counselors have serious skin conditions as well, and can provide support and advice to campers. What are those little half moons in your nails?
The pale half moon shape at the base of each nail is called the lunule. It shows where the hardening process is not yet complete.
The American Academy of Dermatology provided these nail facts:
Nails grow about 0.1 mm or about .004 inches per day.
Fingernails tend to grow a little faster than toenails.
Toe nails are about twice as thick as fingernails.
Men's nails usually grow faster than women's nails.
Nails on your dominant hand tend to grow faster.
