Buy large bulbs. They yield larger, stronger flowers and in some cases, more than one stem of blooms. Choose bulbs that are firm, with crisp papery skins.
Handle bulbs with care. Each contains a minuscule precursor to next springs blossom; rough handling can destroy it so all you get is leaves.
Plant when the night temperatures average between forty and fifty degrees.
Soil moisture from rainfall will encourage newly planted bulbs to develop healthy root systems to survive the winter. However, plant in well draining soil to prevent rot.
Plant in full sun areas that you will see and enjoy. Full sun in spring is easier to find, because many spring bulbs bloom before the trees leaf out.
Plant bulbs in clusters rather than long lines for the most visual impact.
