The Lovers of Valdaro - an eternal embrace
Two skeletons, a man and a woman, buried in embrace for over 5,000 years.
The skeletons from the Neolithic (“The Late Stone Age”) locked in a tender embrace were dug at Valdaro, near Mantova, just 40 kilometers (25 miles) south of Verona, the romantic city where Shakespeare's “Romeo and Juliet” story took place.
Archaeologists think the couple, almost certainly a man and a woman (but this is still unconfirmed), was young because their teeth were not worn down. “Buried between 5,000 to 6,000 years ago, the prehistoric lovers are believed to have been a man and a woman and are thought to have died young, as their teeth were found intact,” said Elena Menotti, the archaeologist who led the diggings.
Amongst other hypotheses, scientists believe the man was killed and the woman suffered a rite sacrifice so that to accompany him in the other life. "We have found plenty of women embracing children but never a couple. Much less a couple hugging -- and they really are hugging. It's possible that the man died first and then the woman was killed in sacrifice to accompany his soul.”

Every 12-18 months Minneapolis-St. Paul magazine surveys 5,000 Twin City physicians and nurses and asks them if they, (or a family member) had a skin problem, what dermatologist would they see? The results are collected and the top 10-15% of the dermatologists named are awarded the title of "Top Doctor". We are very happy to announce that Dr. Crutchfield was selected by his peers as a "Top Dermatologist" for 2003-2004, 2004-2005, 2006 issues, and now for 2007. Dr. Crutchfield readily admits it is a true team effort and says it really should be "Top Dermatology Office".

According to the Archives of Internal Medicine, most heart attack patients wait more than 2 hours before seeking emergency care, primarily because they do not recognize the symptoms of a heart attack. Delayed awareness of the onset of a heart attack means that only one in five heart attack victims gets to the hospital quickly enough to benefit from life-saving medical treatments.

Reminder of the Month
Cooler weather months are the best time to test your home for radon. Radon is a cancer-causing natural radioactive gas that you can’t see, smell or taste. It can be found in all 50 states. Its presence in your home can pose a danger to your family's health. Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in America and claims more than 20,000 lives annually. Unless you test for it, there is no way of telling how much is present.
The NSC (National Safety Council) offers low-cost short- and, long-term radon test kits, which include lab analysis and return postage. Kits can also be ordered directly from the Helpline, (800) 557-2366, with a credit card payment.

Special Skin Microscope
As a general rule of thumb, Dr. Crutchfield recommends that everyone have a baseline comprehensive skin examination at some point in their life. Based on the examination, your dermatologist will recommend how often you should have additional exams in the future. The most important thing is to get a prompt evaluation if you have a mole changing in any way (size, color, or shape) or any spot on your skin that bleeds and does not heal in three weeks (without provocation). Also, any person who has had a melanoma should make sure that all of their first-degree relatives have a baseline skin examination. At Crutchfield Dermatology we are pioneers in the use of the revolutionary dermatoscope in the evaluation of suspicious moles. This allows Dr. Crutchfield to better see the inner structure of the mole, often times eliminating the need for an uncomfortable biopsy. |
