Uncle Sam

Interesting Facts about the 4th of July

  • Uncle Sam was first popularized during the War of 1812, when the term appeared on supply containers. Believe it or not, the U. S. Congress didn't adopt him as a national symbol until 1961.
  • Independence Day commemorates the formal adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. However, it was not declared a legal holiday until 1941.
  • Fireworks were made in China as early as the 11th century. The Chinese used their pyrotechnic mixtures for war rockets and explosives.
  • The American national anthem, the "Star-Spangled Banner," is set to the tune of an English drinking song ("To Anacreon in Heaven").

Cancer Survivors

Cancer survivors staying on the job
About 40 percent of the more than 1 million Americans diagnosed with some form of cancer each year are working-age adults. Nearly 10 million people are cancer survivors. Many cancer patients and survivors are still able to do their jobs. In addition, co-workers can be an important source of support.

100 varieties of tomatoes
Did you know that there are over 100 varieties of tomatoes and not all tomatoes are red? Some tomatoes are violet, purple, blue, and variations of green. Many of these have exotic and very rich flavors, and you can grow these tomatoes in your garden. These types of tomatoes are known as heirloom and an organization called Seed Savers Exchange collects and sells them. Visit their web site, seedsavers.com, for more information on heirloom tomatoes, heirloom vegetables, wild flowers, and many other interesting items. If you are a gardener, this is both exciting and good news.

acne

Why do you get pruney after a bath?
Because the outer layer of skin (the epidermis) absorbs a little bit of water when we soak too long in the tub. The skin on the feet and hands is thicker than the skin anywhere else on the body and therefore makes any changes more noticeable. As the epidermis expands, the layer below it, the dermis, does not swell, so the epidermis buckles in areas.

Interesting facts about the Sphinx breed:

  • In Canada during 1966, a Domestic Shorthair gave birth to a liter of kittens with a naturally occurring mutation of hairlessness. This liter became the ancestors of today's Sphynx.
  • Interestingly, the same genetic mutation that causes hairlessness in a Sphynx is the same mutation that causes the curly and sometimes nearly absent coat in a Devon Rex. Click here to read more about the Devon Rex.

What is special about this microscope?
It is a revolutionary dermatoscope used for the evaluation of suspicious moles. This instrument allows Dr. Crutchfield to better see the inner structure of the mole, often times eliminating the need for an uncomfortable biopsy. As a general rule of thumb, Dr. Crutchfield recommends that everyone have a baseline comprehensive skin examination at some point in their life. Based on the examination your dermatologist will recommend how often you should have additional exams in the future. The most important thing is to get a prompt evaluation if you have a mole changing in any way (size, color, or shape) or any spot on your skin that bleeds and does not heal in three weeks (without provocation). Also, any person who has had a melanoma should make sure that all of their first-degree relatives have a baseline skin examination.

stethescope That's so weird! Why does my body do that?

Sneezing
Sneezing is the body's way of cleansing the nasal passages of harmful things like germs and irritants. When you inhale debris that irritates your nose's lining, nerves send a signal to the brain to clear the passageway. The brain fires a signal to the chest and diaphragm to blast out some air. At the same time, the brain tells the throat to close up. Instead of escaping through the mouth, much of the air goes through the nose. Think of it as an air purification system.

snoring

What is CPAP?

It stands for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure, and is used to alleviate snoring problems. Nasal CPAP delivers air into your airway through a specially designed nasal mask or pillow. The mask does not breathe for you; the flow of air creates enough pressure when you inhale to keep your airway open. CPAP is considered the most effective nonsurgical treatment for the alleviation of snoring and obstructive sleep apnea.

Before the invention of the nasal CPAP, a recommended course of action for a patient with sleep apnea or habitual snoring was a tracheostomy, or creating a temporary opening in the windpipe. The CPAP treatment has been found to be nearly 100 percent effective in eliminating sleep apnea and snoring when used correctly and will eliminate the necessity of a surgical procedure.
