 |

 |
 |
Fun, helpful, and informative articles
In addition to providing you with some of the most up to date dermatologic information, our newsletter will also bring you fun, helpful, and informative articles on a variety of interesting topics. You will find these 'fun' topics sprinkled throughout the newsletter. Our goal is to provide content that is 50% useful medical information and 50% (non-medical) fun and practical topics. The newsletter will be arranged in a 'table of contents' format so you can quickly scan down for topics of interest. These can then be selected for more complete information. Starting this Fall, the frequency of the newsletter will be monthly and we will be going to an electronic magazine format also know as an 'ezine'! (As an aside, this is a photo of an iris from Dr. Crutchfield's garden). We hope you enjoy this format and look forward to your comments at

Pediatric Dermatology Update
Dr. Crutchfield recommends sun-protective clothing as a first line of defense against the sun. Did you know that 75% of one’s total lifetime sun exposure usually occurs before the age of 21? This means often times before someone is wise enough to understand the value of sun protection, they have already received the majority of their lifetime’s sun exposure. It is important to teach children at a young age the importance of sun protection. Dr. Crutchfield recommends a sunscreen with an SPF rating of 15 or higher and ultraviolet A protection. Sunscreen should be applied approximately 30 minutes before going out into the sun (it takes about 20 minutes for it to properly set up in the skin) and then reapplied approximately every hour to maintain the effectiveness. The reapplication should occur sooner if one is either actively sunning or perspiring. Dr. Crutchfield recommends sunscreen for children six months of age or older. For information on sun protection, please visit the sun protection page on our web site by clicking here.

Skin Cancer Update
Did you know that basal cell skin cancer is the most common cancer in the world? Over one million cases are detected in the United States every year. Squamous cell cancer is the second most common, approximately a quarter million cases are detected in the United States per year. Melanoma is the least common of the major three but is the most serious. About 40,0000 cases are detected per year in the United States. Once again, if you notice a changing mole or bleeding spot, have it evaluated promptly. For more helpful information on this topic and to see our streaming video entitled Skin Cancer Detection, Treatment and Prognosis, please click here to visit our skin cancer page where the video is located at the bottom of the page.

Acne Update
We are pleased to announce the FDA approval and arrival of the Aramis Laser. This is glass erbium laser that targets the oil producing glands in the skin to reduce oil production and to minimize bacteria counts. Patients undergo a series of four to eight treatments in combination with other topical and, sometimes, systemic agents. This new treatment form for acne is tremendously promising and popular. It is effective and painless. We also have a new line of prescription strength alpha-hydroxy acid pads that are convenient, work well, and are especially designed and suited for students on the go. For many before and after success photos and additional acne information, please visit the acne page on our web site by clicking here.

Special Skin Microscope easily checks worrisome moles
As a general rule of thumb, Dr. Crutchfield recommends that everyone should have a baseline comprehensive skin examination at some point in their life. Based on the examination, your dermatologist will recommend how often you should have additional exams in the future. The most important thing is that if you have a mole changing in any way (size, color, or shape) or any spot on your skin that bleeds and does not heal in three weeks (without provocation), then these lesions should be evaluated promptly. Also, any person who has had a melanoma should make sure that all of their first degree relatives have a baseline skin examination. At Crutchfield Dermatology we are pioneers in the use of the revolutionary dermatoscope in the evaluation of suspicious moles. This allows Dr. Crutchfield to better see the inner structure of the mole, often times avoiding an uncomfortable biopsy.

Vitiligo Update
Vitiligo is one of the most difficult skin conditions to treat. For reasons unknown, the cells that produce color in the skin are destroyed, leaving many small and often times larger patches of white skin. With the advent of narrow-band ultraviolet B phototherapy, this vexing problem has been addressed for many, many patients. We use a combination of topical treatments and narrow-band phototherapy measures to effectively treat this difficult condition. For before and after photographs and success stories, please visit our vitiligo page.
