Dr. Crutchfield says:
When it comes to sun protection, my favorite choice is sun-protective clothing. The nice thing about sun-protective clothing is that once you put it on, it continues to work for you and you don’t have to reapply it. There are two exceptional manufacturers of sun-protective clothing, and their links can be found below. The key with sun-protective clothing is that the fabric has a special and tight weave that blocks out the sun. The manufacturers have also developed these fabrics so that they are ultralight, and many of the garments are vented so they feel very light and breezy. I personally spent time on the beach in Hawaii in 90° temperatures and the garments were so cool, it felt like I was wearing nothing at all; they were extremely comfortable.
The additional line of defense would be the appropriate sunscreens. Most people are not aware, but sunscreens take about 20 minutes to fully set up in the skin. That’s why it is very important to apply sunscreen 30 minutes before your sun exposure. They should also be reapplied frequently, every 30 to 60 minutes, and even more frequently if you are actively perspiring or swimming. Sunscreens need to have a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher and must also contain ultraviolet A (UVA) protection. The sunscreens that we list below meet both of these criteria.
The key point when it comes to sun protection is that the majority of people will receive 80% of their total lifetime sun exposure by the time they are 21. The irony of this is by the time most people are wise enough to protect themselves from the sun, the majority of the damage has already been done. That is why it is so important for grandparents and parents to educate and protect children and grandchildren when it comes to the sun.
