Is the price of beauty worth paying your life?
The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, has launched a campaign warning consumers that cosmetic treatments, such as those using lasers, intense pulsed light devices, chemical peels, soft tissue fillers and botulinum toxin treatments are medical procedures that should only be performed by a fully-qualified physician, or under the direct supervision of a physician.
This article contains important information and advice about selecting a physician for cosmetic procedures – including real world horror stories.

Which will keep you drier, running or walking through the rain?
First the theory. We divide the raindrops hitting you into two categories: (1) head drops, which fall from above and would hit you even if you were standing still; and (2) chest drops, which you run/walk into and which wouldn't hit you if you were standing still. We can all agree that the number of head drops is strictly a function of how long you're out in the rain; if you run, fewer head drops. The question is whether the allegedly larger number of chest drops you get when running outweighs the definitely larger number of head drops you get while walking.
Not to keep you in suspense, the answer is no. If we ignore aerodynamic effects, we can show mathematically (but won't) that while you'll collect many fewer head drops running rather than walking, you'll get exactly the same number of chest drops, regardless of the speed at which you travel. Bottom line: you'll be a lot wetter if you walk.

What lasers are used at Crutchfield Dermatology? Lasers are becoming increasingly popular and have many medical uses. Dr. Crutchfield has performed more than 5000 laser procedures.
In our clinic we use several lasers. Their functions are based on the target skin problem that is being treated. Different colored targets interact with different wavelengths of light, which requires the use of different lasers. For example, if we are treating a red birthmark...

Crutchfield Dermatology's Question of the Month Is it smart to put butter on a burn?
No. Save the butter for breakfast. Butter is the wrong thing to put on a burn. It will trap the heat in the skin and prolong the pain. Use cool water instead. – from Why do men have nipples?

Crutchfield Dermatology's Word of the Month
oxymoron • \ahk-sih-MOR-ahn\ • noun
- A combination of contradictory or incongruous words
- Example Sentence: "That's an oxymoron!" said Joanne, when she heard the DJ describe the song as an "instant classic."
- Did you know? The Greeks exhaustively classified the elements of rhetoric, or effective speech and writing, and gave the name "oxymoron," literally "pointed foolishness," to the deliberate juxtaposing of seemingly contradictory words. The roots of "oxymoron" -- "oxys," meaning "sharp" or "keen," and "moros," meaning "foolish" -- are nearly antonyms themselves, making "oxymoron" nicely self-descriptive. "Oxymoron" originally applied to a meaningful paradox condensed into a couple of words, as in "precious bane," "lonely crowd," or "sweet sorrow." Today, however, "oxymoron" can also refer to unintentional contradictions, like "a plastic glass."
- from Merriam-Webster

Special Skin Microscope
As a general rule of thumb, Dr. Crutchfield recommends that everyone have a baseline comprehensive skin examination at some point in their life. Based on the examination, your dermatologist will recommend how often you should have additional exams in the future. The most important thing is to get a prompt evaluation if you have a mole changing in any way (size, color, or shape) or any spot on your skin that bleeds and does not heal in three weeks (without provocation). Also, any person who has had a melanoma should make sure that all of their first-degree relatives have a baseline skin examination. At Crutchfield Dermatology we are pioneers in the use of the revolutionary dermatoscope in the evaluation of suspicious moles. This allows Dr. Crutchfield to better see the inner structure of the mole, often times eliminating the need for an uncomfortable biopsy. |

Crutchfield Dermatology’s Phrase of the Month
What does “Pass the Buck” mean?
Poker became very popular in America during the second half of the 19th century. Players were highly suspicious of cheating or any form of bias and there's considerable folklore depicting gunslingers in shoot-outs based on accusations of dirty dealing. In order to avoid unfairness the deal changed hands during sessions. The person who was next in line to deal would be given a marker. This was often a knife, and knives often had handles made of buck's horn - hence the marker becoming known as a buck. When the dealer's turn was done he 'passed the buck'.

What can I do to decrease my stress right now?
Take deep breaths when you feel tense.
Place a reminder on your desk and in your car to sit up straight. Poor posture makes it difficult for the body to take in oxygen.
Listen to relaxing music. Light jazz, classical or mood music slows the heart rate.
Keep lavender oil handy. Rub a bit into a handkerchief. Breathe from the handkerchief from time to time.

Like to hear what our patients are saying?
"My son Nick had struggled with atopic dermatitis for 2 years. The treatment “ladder” program with light treatments Dr. Crutchfield recommended for him was just amazing. He is much more comfortable, sleeps better, and does much better in school. He still has flare ups, but they are much less severe and short-lived. I am so happy that we went to see Dr. Crutchfield."
