Face Crutchfield Dermatology Welcomes Perlane
The Latest Tool in the War Against Facial Wrinkles and Facial Scars.

The difference between Perlane and Restylane is Perlane is a similar yet larger molecule than Restylane, which allows it to fill up more volume. It is good for deeper lines in the face, such as the lines that run from the nose to the corner of the mouth, and other areas that need more extensive filling. Because the molecule is larger, it should last a bit longer, too.

Does the kind of amnesia you see in the movies really exist?
Amnesia seems to be one of the favored topics of screen-writers for an easy plot twist. The amnesia that doctors see is very different than the big-screen version. It is best defined as a failure to retrieve information or to place information in an appropriate context. The memory loss is usually temporary.

Facial Burns This patient received bad facial burns from a "strip mall" skin care center.
This happened 1 week before her graduation (she was valedictorian of her class, scheduled to give the graduation speech). She came to Dr. Crutchfield for help. It took about 6 months of skilled treatment (steroids, antibiotics, silicone gels, multiple laser correction treatments, topical agents, plus a few other "tricks") but he finally got her back to normal (as evidenced by the after photo).
Bottom line: When it comes to your skin, especially your face - "Quality Matters".

What is special about this microscope?
It is a revolutionary dermatoscope used for the evaluation of suspicious moles. This instrument allows Dr. Crutchfield to better see the inner structure of the mole, often times eliminating the need for an uncomfortable biopsy. As a general rule of thumb, Dr. Crutchfield recommends that everyone have a baseline comprehensive skin examination at some point in their life. Based on the examination your dermatologist will recommend how often you should have additional exams in the future. The most important thing is to get a prompt evaluation if you have a mole changing in any way (size, color, or shape) or any spot on your skin that bleeds and does not heal in three weeks (without provocation). Also, any person who has had a melanoma should make sure that all of their first-degree relatives have a baseline skin examination.

stethescope That’s so weird! Why does my body do that?

  • What is brain freeze?
It happens when the nerves in the roof of your mouth are hyperstimulated by cold foods, like ice cream and frozen drinks. The nerves are in your mouth, but nerve center is in your brain, so that’s where you feel the pain. To get rid of it, put your warm tongue on the roof of your mouth.
  • What is the funny bone?
It’s not a bone at all. In fact, it’s a nerve – the ulnar nerve which is exposed at your elbow and striking it sends a shock wave down your arm.
  • Why do we have earwax?
To keep foreign matter from invading the ear canal. It is produced by the outer ear to protect the inner ear from infection. The sticky substance prevents dirt and bugs from getting in. the wax removes itself naturally, so Q-tips should be limited to the outside of the ear. Q-tips can actually push ear wax further in.

polka Why do we call polka dots “polka” dots when all they really are, are dots?
Polka dots are a by-product of the immense popularity of polka dancing in the nineteenth century. There were polka jackets, polka hats, even polka gauze. Whether you were originally supposed to use these while engaged in polka-ing it is not clear; more probably it was like the “radio” in Radio Flyer wagons – the inventor just wanted to bask in the penumbra of with-itness the word suggested. “Polka dots” does have the advantage of suggesting a pattern of dots, which the word “dots” alone does not.

Acne care tips
To prevent scars, do not pop, squeeze or pick at acne; seek treatment early for acne that does not respond to over-the-counter medications. Gently wash affected areas twice a day. Vigorous washing and scrubbing can irritate your skin and make acne worse.
Shampoo hair often, daily if it is oily.
Use oil-free cosmetics and sunscreens.
Avoid astringents, which strip your skin of natural moisture.
