Ask the Doc
I read in the 8/15/08 St. Paul paper that Vanicream, Eucerin and Dermabase and some other skin creams may cause an increased risk of skin cancer.  I've been a Vanicream user for many years and am very concerned.   The articles say the products were tested on mice and that people should not be concerned.  It's hard to make sense of these conflicting statements. Thanks, Deborah K.

Dr. Crutchfield says: We have used these in humans for 30 years and have seen no increase in human skin cancer.  The most important factor is to protect from ultraviolet radiation.

For young people with a serious skin condition, Camp Discovery offers a summer camping experience unlike any they've had before. Every year, the American Academy of Dermatology sponsors a week of fishing, boating, swimming, water skiing, arts and crafts, and just plain fun.

Under the expert care of dermatologists and nurses, Camp Discovery offers campers the opportunity to spend a week among other young people who have similar skin conditions. Many of the counselors have serious skin conditions as well, and can provide support and advice to campers. Fun, friendship, and independence are on the top of the agenda, and everyone shares in the discovery of what it's like to be included.
