Companies are looking for ways to trim where they can. While not every job can be saved, you can help yourself become more recession proof. The staffing firm Robert Haff International offers these suggestions to people looking to improve their standing in the workplace.
First, be proactive. Don't wait for assignments to be handed to you, go after them. Also, look for ways to help the company save money and become more efficient. Another thing you can do is learn new skill sets, and the bottom line is to make yourself more valuable to the company. Those that take initiative can make suggestions for profits, improvement or, again, ways to create efficiencies can certainly help. They tend to stand out in a crowd, perhaps more than some others that may not take that opportunity. Another thing that the company says is important is that you must be flexible. Never tell someone, "That's not my job," during these tight times. Everyone is expected to take on new projects and new responsibilities. The bottom line: Be as versatile and as valuable as you possibly can.
