This is the name of one of the two continents that existed on Earth about 380 million years ago. The other was called Laurasia. By about 250 million years ago the two had joined to form a single supercontinent called Pangaea. Pangaea then broke up, between 200 million and 135 million years ago, separating the two continents once again. Gondwana consisted of the land that is now South America, Africa, Antarctica, Australia, and India. It broke up gradually, and its pieces drifted to their present positions on the globe. Laurasia included North America and Eurasia.
