Sideburns got their name from General Ambrose Everett Burnside, Commander of the Union Army of the Potomac during the Civil War. General Burnside had long whiskers down the sides of his face in front of his ears. When others grew similar whiskers, they were said to be sporting “burnsides,” a term that somehow got turned around and became “sideburns.”
