Instead of freckles, I have patches of white spots on my skin. What gives?
What you’re experiencing is likely vitiligo, according to Dr. Charles Crutchfield of Crutchfield Dermatology, who regularly treats patients for the disorder. “This is the same condition that Michael Jackson had,” says Crutchfield.
“Vitiligo occurs when the cells responsible for skin pigmentation die early or are destroyed by the immune system. It can also be induced by environmental toxins and exacerbated by stress.”
Although vitiligo cannot be prevented, it can be treated with topical prescription medications and phototherapy administered at a dermatologist’s office.
