Face Shaving Beauty Secret? – New Beauty Magazine
By Elise Minton, Article
As women, we go to any length and spare no expense when it comes to getting rid of hair on our face. We wax, tweeze, pluck, trim and laser it away to keep our skin totally fuzz-free. But, could shaving your face be the biggest under-the-radar beauty secret that’s taking the industry by storm? All signs point to yes.
So, even though it seems like it’s the thing to do, shaving your face isn’t new (Cleopatra and Marilyn Monroe were said to do it, too). It’s just that up until now, no one really talked about it.

For men, it’s totally normal for them to shave their face. For women, it’s a different story. “Traditionally, shaving has been looked at as a male treatment that would cause the hair to grow back darker and coarser, which is not true,” says Eagen, MN dermatologist Charles E. Crutchfield, MD.
Just like the rest of our body, our faces aren’t immune to hair. The difference: The hair on the face is usually thinner, finer and lighter in color. But, that doesn’t mean it’s invisible. Many women are bothered by facial hair and shaving it is one of the quickest and easiest ways to get rid of it. “It’s an old wives’ tale that shaving makes the hair grow back darker and thicker,” says Dr. Crutchfield.
As much of a no-brainer as shaving sounds, there are a few downsides to doing it, the major one being the risk of developing ingrown hairs and irritated skin. For all the potential negatives that come along with it, there are also the pluses: no hair, smooth skin, removal of dead skin and the perfect canvas for makeup (it literally glides on).
If you’re going to shave your face, don’t throw caution to the wind and use any old blade—stock up on a razor made for the brows, like Ardell Brow Trim & Shape Tool ($4) or Ladyn Touch N Brow Razor ($4.99) so you can really get to the hair at the root. Or, invest $195 dollars in DermaFlash. Also, make sure to avoid any active acne lesions, rashes and red spots.
Shaving your face also needs to be done a bit differently than shaving your legs, underarms or bikini line. You’ll need to be super gentle and take your time—this is one part of the body that you don’t want to cut or nick.
Once you’re all done, your skin may be red for about an hour and you may want to apply a calming or anti-redness serum. You’ll notice an immediate difference in your skin. It will be smoother, and the next time you put on foundation or powder, it won’t catch in those tiny hairs above your lip and on the sides of your face.
Secret’s out. While it may be one of beauty’s best-kept ones, more women than you think are probably shaving their faces and keeping it under wraps.
