Milk Distribution Facts

20 ThingsOriginally, most milk was produced for local use, rarely being distributed beyond county lines.  By the 1950’s better roads (including the interstate highway system) made it possible to ship milk more easily to areas where there was little local production.  Typically, milk had been collected in small containers from local dairies every 3 days or so.  As more local farmers switched to bigger, better refrigeration and storage capabilities, and more refrigerated bulk tanker trucks came into use, pickup intervals lengthened and distribution widened.
