Vitiligo – What is It?
Hi, this is Dr. Charles Crutchfield clinical professor of dermatology and medical director at Crutchfield Dermatology.
Today we are talking about Vitiligo.
Vitiligo is a skin condition that occurs in all people but is most noticable in patients with tan, brown, or dark skin.
Vitiligo is an auto-immune condition where the immune system attacks the cells that produce color. These cells are called melanocytes.
The color producing cells are destroyed and white patches are left behind. Vitiligo is a serious social problem. It can profoundly effect self-esteem. We now have some very good treatments for Vitiligo including new topical medications and also special light treatments that can cause the color to return. So if you are suffering from Vitiligo remember there are great treatments available today.
