Where the term “eavesdropping” comes from

Before gutters were a common fixture, most houses were built with large overhanging eaves designed to cause rainwater to fall away from the base of the house.  The area under these eaves was called an eavesdrop, and anyone standing in this area to listen at a window was called an eavesdropper.
