Why is Turkey the traditional meat served on Thanksgiving?

Turkey cookingWhen Governor Bradford initiated the observance of Thanksgiving in 1621, he sent hunters out to bring back meat for the celebration.  Since wild turkeys were plentiful in New England at that that, it isn’t surprising that most of the meat the hunters brought back was turkey.  From this first celebration arose the custom of serving that particular meat at Thanksgiving.
