What is this on this little girl's ear?

3 year old girl (my daughter Arianna), otherwise healthy, has some type of bug on her ear after playing near the woods.

What is your diagnosis?

Diagnosis:
Wood Tick

This is a wood tick. It does NOT transmit Lyme disease.  (See photo of female dear tick below). Deer ticks can transmit Lyme disease and adequate follow up and treatment in cases of deer tick bites is mandatory. For a discussion of wood vs.deer ticks, click here. Here is a great tip for removing ticks! If you are unsure of what type of tick it is, save it for identification by a knowledgeable person.

This tip works well in those places where it's
sometimes difficult to get to with tweezers, such as between toes, in the middle of a head full of dark hair, etc.
1. Apply a glob of liquid soap to a cotton ball.

2. Cover the tick with the soap-soaked cotton ball and let it stay on the
tick for 20-30 seconds, after which the tick will
come out on its own and be stuck to the cotton ball when you lift it
away.

This technique has a very high success rate (and low trauma to the patient) rate.
