What is wrong with this man’s eyes?
While watching the MLB All-Star game this year my brother asked me “What’s wrong with that player’s eyes?”
What is your diagnosis?
Diagnosis:
Heterochromia Iridum
This is a different coloration of the iris. Sometimes it is the full iris, the central portion, or just sections. The vast majority of cases are genetic, but the condition can be caused by medications, disease and trauma. The uneven coloration is due to uneven melanin distribution, or in some disease/genetic states (e.g. Waardenburg Syndrome), deposits of abnormal metabolites. In some cases lasers can be used to correct the condition.
This is a fairly common condition that has 3 sub-types: 1) Complete Heterochromia, 2)Central Heterochromia, 3) Sectoral (partial) Heterochromia.
Max Scherzer (Major League Baseball pitcher with the Detroit Tigers pictured above) has complete heterochromia.
Complete heterochromia iridum
Central heterochromia iridum
Sectoral (partial) heterochromia iridum
Many famous people have the condition including:
Actors
- Dan Aykroyd
- Kate Bosworth
- Henry Cavill
- Norma Eberhardt

- Mila Kunis
- Jonathan Rhys Meyers
- Simon Pegg

(Some sources indicate that Bowie's appearance results only from a permanently dilated pupil, and not from heterochromia. This condition is known as anisocoria.)
