This baby boy was born 6 weeks premature. He was given a 4 hour pass to leave the hospital to participate in a “new baby” cultural event/celebration with the family at their home. The new family puppy (from a rescue shelter) took a strong liking to the baby during the brief visit.  Three days after returning, this annular rash developed on the child’s cheek.

What’s your diagnosis?

Diagnosis: Tinea Faciei  

A KOH microscopic evaluation was performed from a gentle scraping of the cheek clearing demonstrating numerous hyphae. The child most likely picked it up from his future loving pal, the puppy. I treated the ringworm/fungal infection with Ketoconazole (Nizoral) cream twice daily for 10 days with complete resolution.  The puppy promptly saw a vet for treatment. The boy went home shortly after resolution. The puppy and the boy, as best buddies, lived happily ever after.
