Case of the Month

A 24 year old man presents for the evaluation of small brown spots on the tip of his tongue. He reports that they have been there for “years” and they are not symptomatic. He is otherwise healthy and does not smoke (anything) or vape.
Diagnosis: (Benign) Pigmented Fungiform Papillae of the Tongue
This is a very common condition seen in persons of color. Unfortunately, it is rarely discussed in textbooks or covered in medical training. The condition is completely benign and requires no treatment except to assure the patient that it is a normal variant and requires no additional work-up, evaluation or treatment.
