What are the brown spots on the back of this party girl's hands?
A 25-year-old woman presents with multiple brown spots on the back of her hands after a fun-filled weekend.

What is your diagnosis?

Phytophotodermatitis

Diagnosis:
Phytophotodermatitis.

There are many plant and fruit oils that once in contact with the skin in conjunction with ultraviolet light produce an inflammatory blistering and/or hyperpigmented reaction. One of the most commonly encountered offending agents is the oil from citrus fruits, most notably limes. In this particular case, the patient had been making margaritas poolside over the weekend, and the combination of the lime juice and sunlight caused the hyperpigmented macules on the back of her hands. There are other agents that can produce a phytophotodermatitis.
