Public Service: Increasing Dermatology Awareness in the African-American community.
(Monica Anders;Producer, Ed Peterson;Technical Director)
In a unique radio format, dermatologist Charles E. Crutchfield III, MD, along with his mother, family practitioner Susan Crutchfield-Mitch, MD, co-hosted “MedChat.” This community radio program promoted dermatologic and general health care to the African-American community in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area weekly on AM radio station 95.0. The program ran both in the original editions and in reruns for almost two years. Beginning the letter “A” and going all the way through the letter “Z,” the radio program featured conditions and diseases that fell into each letter category. Each week more than 1,200 listeners tuned in to hear the latest health and dermatologic information from this mother and son team. Listeners were encouraged to send in questions or call the show with their pressing inquiries. “MedChat” remains a clear example of how public service radio shows can promote targeted health and dermatologic messages.
