If a shattered light bulb needs replacing, don’t try unscrewing it with your bare hands, since there are almost always shards of glass left behind. Instead, make sure the lamp is unplugged, then put on some dishwashing gloves and use a wadded-up piece of newspaper. If there is a substantial amount of the bulb left, you can also use a wedge of apple. Place the apple on top and force it down onto the shards until it sticks, then turn.
